Two Chemical Plant Explosions in the Houston Area

Fibich, Leebron, Copeland & Briggs

Over the past two weeks, the Houston area has experienced two massive explosions in two different chemical plants. One at the KMCO chemical plant in Crosby that happened on April 2, and another at the Intercontinental Terminals Company (ITC) plant in Deer Park on March 17.

KMCO Plant Explosion

At least one person has died and two others have suffered serious injuries after an explosion occurred in the KMCO plant after 11 AM. The injured workers were taken to local hospitals via emergency helicopter.

The blast shook neighboring homes up to 20 miles away from the chemical plant, which mainly manufactures antifreeze products. Large plumes of smoke could be seen over the area.

Just moments prior to a series of blasts and an enormous explosion, plant workers were warned of a leak and were ordered to evacuate. Additionally, many workers attempted to leave the building through an exit gate, but it was locked.

ITC Plant Explosion

Fortunately, no deaths or injuries have been reported in this chemical plant explosion. The massive plume of smoke rose up to 4,000 feet in the air and could be seen up to 35 miles away.

The facility burned for nearly three days. But hours after the fire was said to be extinguished, an explosion occurred.

According to authorities, a drop in water pressure caused the fire. A total of eight tanks were burned by the fire, most of them containing gasoline and products used in glues, plain thinner, and nail polish remover.

Suffered an Injury or Wrongful Death in a Chemical Plant Explosion?

Chemical plant explosions can be devastating to communities. Not only can workers suffer catastrophic and fatal injuries, but also the residents in the neighborhoods surrounding these facilities.

In many cases, these explosions are caused by factors which could’ve been prevented by taking precautionary measures and using proper care when handling explosive and flammable substances. Plant owners or managers often fail to protect their employees by allowing them to use outdated equipment, failing to recommend safety measures, or otherwise taking shortcuts to make a profit.
