Erin Copeland, attorney and partner at Fibich, Leebron, Copeland & Briggs, will be a guest speaker at the upcoming HB Litigation Conferences 3-day event, Mass Tort Med School + Class Actions, in Orlando, Florida on March 16. Erin will discuss litigation surrounding Essure®, which is a permanent contraceptive medical device that has been the subject of a number of complaints and lawsuits regarding its severe adverse effects.

Last month, Erin was appointed by the court to serve on the Plaintiffs’ Executive Committee in the California consolidated litigation pending in Alameda County. As a prominent figure in the fight against Essure®, Erin often speaks out against this dangerous and controversial device, informing others of its risks and the legal recourse that can be taken against its manufacturer. She is also the Co-Chair of the American Association of Justice’s Essure® Litigation Group.

Essure® is a medical device which consists of two metal coils made of nickel and titanium which are implanted into a woman’s fallopian tubes to block sperm and prevent pregnancy. The device was touted to be incisionless and required little to no patient downtime following implantation in a doctor’s office. Since Essure® went on the market in 2002, thousands of women across the country have reported injuries as a result of the device. Following its own investigation into the complaints, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently ordered that a black box warning, the strongest warning for medical devices, be added to the product label highlighting the risk of migration, perforation, and more. Now, patients who are considering having the device implanted in them must also sign a multi-page patient decision checklist identifying the risks associated with the product.

Fibich, Leebron, Copeland & Briggs was founded in 1992 and has since proudly fought for the rights of victims injured by dangerous drugs and medical devices. The firm’s Houston personal injury lawyers have taken on defective product manufacturers in the pursuit of justice on behalf of individuals injured by dangerous products. They continue to do so in the Essure® litigation.
