How To Remove Essure® After Experiencing Complications

law firm exterior

Many women who were implanted with the Essure® permanent birth control device have complained of painful and severe adverse events that required the women to have the device surgically removed. The Essure® device has been marketed as a non-incisional alternative to other permanent birth control surgical procedures, such as vasectomy and tubal ligation. Two Essure® micro-inserts or coils are implanted into the woman’s fallopian tubes and are intended to remain there permanently and prevent pregnancy for the lifetime of the woman. However, many women have suffered from complications like intractable bleeding, heavy menstrual cycles, pain, ectopic pregnancies, migration, perforation of internal organs, and more that have required the women to undergo major surgery to remove the device.

Options to remove the device may include:

  • Salpingotomy — The surgeon cuts into the fallopian tubes to remove one or both of the coils.
  • Uterine Preservation Surgery — The surgeon performs a tubal anastomosis, dissecting the woman’s fallopian tubes before removing the coils and reconnecting the fallopian tubes to the uterus.
  • Hysterectomy — Many times, removing a deeply embedded Essure® device is much more difficult. In these cases, a complete hysterectomy may be necessary, which removes the woman’s uterus, fallopian tubes, and cervix.

Essure® has been marketed as a safe product; but, earlier this year, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered Bayer to place a black box warning on the device to increase awareness of the potential dangerous complications. Still, the manufacturer has not done enough to provide consumers with peace of mind regarding the damages the device may cause and the future of Essure®.

If you have been injured as a result of the Essure® device, you need to know what action you can take to help remedy the situation. You may be able to file a lawsuit against the manufacturer to seek financial compensation to cover medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and more. You have rights – take immediate action to protect them!
