Your Diabetes Medication Can Lead to Heart Failure - Call (713) 999-3681.
Have you or a loved one been taking Onglyza and Kombiglyze XR? These drugs could be the cause of congestive heart failure.
Prescribed to patients with Type II diabetes, these medications contain saxagliptin, a DPP-4 inhibitor that helps the pancreas to produce more insulin and keeps the liver from overproducing glucose. It is this active ingredient of saxagliptin that has also been linked to several serious health risks.
Onglyza and Kombiglyze were originally approved in 2009 and 2010, respectively, but since then, extensive studies —including a study conducted by a Harvard cardiologist that involved over 16,000 diabetic patients — have linked saxagliptin to a host of hospitalizations, illnesses, and causes of death.
An FDA committee agreed to include warning labels that state heart failure is a potential side effect of taking saxagliptin. In April 2015, the FDA issued similar warnings in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) about potential heart failure from taking saxagliptin.
As early as 2013, the FDA voted to include warning labels on Onglyza and Kombiglyze that say cardiac failure is a potential side effect of taking saxagliptin.
Pharmaceutical Companies Failed to Warn the Public
Though many in the medical community were alerted to the dangers of these medications for years, it appears that the manufacturers of these drugs, AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb, took measures to keep the news from reaching the public, continuing to sell these dangerous drugs to consumers.
