What Is Kombiglyze?
Kombiglyze is a prescription medication containing saxagliptin and metformin hydrochloride. These medications are used to help adults with type 2 diabetes manage the effects of hyperglycemia. The medication is intended to supplement a healthy routine regarding nutrition, diet, and exercise.
What Are the Dangers of Taking Kombiglyze?
In 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that medications containing saxagliptin increased the risk of heart failure in patients with preexisting heart and kidney conditions. In 2017, the FDA added a black box warning to Kombiglyze regarding the risk of lactic acidosis.
Besides lactic acidosis and heart failure, other side-effects of Kombiglyze include:
- Pancreatitis – inflammation of the pancreas
- Arthralgia – severe joint pain
- Hypoglycemia – low blood sugar
If you suspect that you are suffering from a severe side-effect of Kombiglyze, you should call your doctor immediately. Importantly, do not stop taking Kombiglyze without first consulting a healthcare professional.
